He graduated from King’s College London in 1974 with a first-class honours degree in History.

Pope Benedict XVI appointed Gilbert the Bishop of Aberdeen on 4 June 2011. On the Feast of the Assumption (15 august), Cardinal Keith O’Brien, the Archbishop of St Andrews, consecrated Gilbert for the office at the Cathedral Church of St Mary of the Assumption, Aberdeen. His episcopal motto was Omnia in Ipso consta (All things are in Him), which is a verse taken from the Letter of the Colossians (1.17).

Dom Alfred Spencer OSB was the first abbot to appoint Gilbert in the history and present day of the monastery. He also appointed Gilbert to several other duties within the community, including sub-prior in 1984; novice master in 1985; and prior in 1990. On 29 October 1992, Gilbert was elected to succeed Spencer by the monastic community. The following 8 December, Conti gave Gilbert the abbatial blessing. He officially took office. From 1993 to 1997, he was a member of the Council of the Union of Monastic Superiors and the Abbot Visitor’s Council since 1995. The community grew to 27 monks during his tenure as abbot.

Gilbert was accepted into the Pluscarden Abbey novitiate in Moray, Scotland in March 1975. At that time, he was given Hugh. On 10 March 1975, Gilbert made his temporary profession in monastic vows.
