Emcke moderates a monthly discussion series called Streitraum, which is held at Berlin’s Schaubuhne theatre since 2004. She was an advisor to Hamburg Media School in 2006 and 2007. She has been a freelance writer since 2007, writing for periodicals such as Die Zeit and Suddeutsche Zeitung. She has been a member of the Bavarian Book Prize jury since 2014.

Emcke gave the opening speech at the 2016 Ruhrtriennale, on the topic of translation. She was awarded the Friedenspreis des Deutschen Buchhandels on 23 October 2016 at the Paulskirche, with a laudation by Seyla Benhabib.

After International Women’s Day in 2019, The Guardian featured her together with three other feminists.

Emcke earned her Ph.D. from Frankfurt under Axel Honneth. Her thesis was on collective identities. She worked from 1998 to 2006 for Der Spiegel, reporting often from conflict areas like Afghanistan, Colombia and Gaza. She was a Yale University lecturer in Political Theory from 2003-04.
