Carol Twombly is one of the most popular and richest Type Designer who was born on June 13, 1959 in Concord, Massachusetts, United States. Fonts like Rosewood, Pepperwood and Zebrawood were created under Twombly’s artistic direction as part of an Adobe project to revive American wood type fonts from the 1880s. She designed two additional Adobe typefaces after this series: Nueva, an original design and Chaparral. These fonts reference nineteenth-century slab serif forms as well as sixteenth-century roman hand, a calligraphic format. In collaboration with Linnea Lundquist, she designed Chaparral.

Twombly joined Adobe 1988. Trajan was one of her first Adobe projects. Twombly was a graphic designer who studied historic scripts to find inspiration for creating digital fonts. In 1989, she successfully translated Roman inscriptions (stone carvings on Trajan’s column) into a modern digital design: Trajan. Next, she used her experience as a calligrapher, and an interest in paleography, to translate Carolingian verals (or decorative capital letters) into a digital typeface called Charlemagne (also 1989). This page was taken from the Anglo-Saxon Benedictional Saint Aethelwold at the British Library. Twombly also based Lithos upon historical precedents. However, he referred more to ancient Greek inscriptions than to specific models. Adobe called Charlemagne and Trajan “Modern Ancients” She also collaborated with William Caslon typeface, a well-known eighteen-century typeface, to design Adobe Caslon. This allowed her to create a digital version. Robert Slimbach was her first complete original typeface design. She worked with her co-designer to create the sans serif Myriad.

Twombly retired from Adobe and from type design in early 1999, to focus on her other design interests, involving textiles and jewelry.

A biography of Twombly and her type design career by Nancy Stock-Allen was published in 2016.

Twombly won the Morisawa Gold Prize for 1984 typeface design, in her first international competition. Morisawa Ltd., the Japanese typesetting manufacturer, was the sponsor of the competition and licensed her entry. It was then marketed as the Mirarae typeface. Twombly also won the 1994 Prix Charles Peignot award from the Association Typographique Internationale. This was the second American woman to win this award.
