The duo ChessBoxer was born from Holmes’ musical explorations with Matt Menefee, Cadillac Sky banjo player. This style combined bluegrass, folk, and rock genres to reflect a Newgrass movement. Holmes and Menefee released their debut EP ChessBoxer in 2013. Royal Masat, double bassist, joined ChessBoxer in 2014. The trio self-released Apollo EP in 2015 while supporting guitarist Warren Haynes during the Ashes & Dust Tour.
In 2013 Holmes received a phone call from Bruce Hornsby who expressed interest in working with him. Holmes became a member of Hornsby’s touring band, the Noisemakers, and from 2014-2017 played fiddle and mandolin on tour and on Hornsby’s latest studio release, Rehab Reunion. Holmes became indispensable to the new sound of the band but left in 2018 when he was invited to become a member of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.
Holmes became a deep contributor to Mumford & Sons where he acted as arranger for the string parts for the band’s anticipated second album Babel. The album went on to win the Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 2012 in which Holmes was recognized for his role by The Recording Academy.
Cadillac Sky was active again in 2006 when they signed to the Skaggs Family record. Their debut album, Blind Man Walking, was released. It reached number 2 on the US Grass Billboard Charts. Cadillac Sky was disbanded in the winter 2011 and declared a hiatus.

Cadillac Sky was formed by Bryan Simpson (vocals and mandolin), Matt Menefee(banjo) and Matt Menefee in 2002. In their early years, the group sounded more like traditional bluegrass. They later developed a progressive bluegrass sound that was widely praised.
They gained popularity touring the south. Holmes drove over night to Nashville in 2004 for an audition with Josh Turner, a rising country traditionalist. Holmes was able to gain his first experience in the industry by traveling with the baritone singer.
Holmes joined Railroad Revival Tour, a multi-day jaunt that Mumford & Sons, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros and Old Crow Medicine Show traveled by a 14-car train from Oakland to New Orleans, playing six concerts along the way. A documentary called Big Easy Express developed out of this tour, directed by Emmett Malloy premiered at SXSW 2012 and won a Grammy Award in 2013.
