Carie Graves was the daughter of Robert and Dyrele Graves. Carie was raised in Wyoming Township, Wisconsin near Spring Green. She attended River Valley High School. Her paternal grandparents, Robert Graves and Carie, had immigrated to the Spring Green region in the 1930s from South Dakota so Ben Graves (her grandfather) could become the Taliesin’s land-and-farm manager. Robert Graves, her father, was a rower for the University of Wisconsin Madison. Derry Graves was born in Baraboo, Wisconsin to a family of circus workers. She was also a registered nurse. She worked as a nurse at Badger Army Ammunition Plant in the 1960s while Robert farmed.

Graves earned a Master’s degree from Harvard and then returned to coaching at Northeastern University in Boston for ten years. In 1998, she was recruited by University of Texas Austin to help them start their new rowing program. Graves retired as a coach in 2014.

Her first experience with rowing was as a walk-on when she was a sophomore at the University of Wisconsin–Madison in the fall of 1973. In the spring of 1975 her team won the women’s national championships in Princeton, New Jersey. Her first international success came in 1975 when she won a silver medal in the eight-oared shell at the World Championships, as part of what came to be known as the “Red Rose Crew”, coached by Harry Parker.

She was the six-oar in the women’s eight, which finished second at the World Championships. She won the Henley Royal Regatta in a four with her team in 1981. It was the first time that women could race at Henley.

She was one of eight Olympic athletes to qualify for 1976 and she won the Olympic bronze medal. This was the first time that women’s rowing was allowed in the Olympics. Graves was the first American female Head Rowing coach. She continued to row and train throughout her tenure at Harvard/Radcliffe. She was a member the 1980 Olympic team and was one of eight who won the Lucerne International Regatta against East Germany. However, she was unable compete in the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow. She was among 461 athletes who received a Congressional Gold Medal several years later. She won a Gold Medal for the women’s eight team at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

In 1998, Graves and her three sisters competed in team rowing at the Nike World Games under the name Team Four Sisters. One of Graves’ sisters is Leslie Graves, founder of the Lucy Burns Institute.
