Jansen has been working to compose new songs, including some that have been released as separate tracks. He is still sought-after as an artist and producer as he collaborates with musicians from different genres. The recent re-releases of the Jansen/Barbieri album from 1995 Stone to Flesh includes a new track called “Map of Falling,” composed by the two musicians in 2015.

He released his first solo album, entitled Slope in 2007. Regarding the creative process behind the album, Jansen stated that he “approached composition attempting to avoid chord and song structures and the usual familiar building blocks. Instead I wanted to piece together unrelated sounds, music samples, rhythms and ‘events’ in an attempt to deviate from my own trappings as a musician.” The album was released on Samadhi Sound, and features Sylvian in a “bluesy” duet with Joan Wasser, and contributions by Anja Garbarek, Sweet Billy Pilgrim, Thomas Feiner and Nina Kinert. On 15 April 2016 Jansen released a second solo album entitled Tender Extinction via Bandcamp and other digital music retailers.

In the year 1991, Jansen, Barbieri, and Karn founded Medium Productions as a venue to release their own songs and also releases from other artists.

In his time in Japan, Jansen dabbled in photography, capturing the band’s erratic life. He organized small-scale photography exhibitions at Tokyo and London between 1982 and 1983 respectively. Some of the images can be found through his site. In October of 2015, Steve published his book of photography titled Through an Unspoken Window via Artes Publishing, a Japanese publication Artes Publishing.

The album was then followed with Obscure Alternatives the same year. Both albums were met with polarized opinions and low sales in the UK However, they was commercially successful in the US. The group’s 3rd album Quiet Life marked a significant departure from their earlier style of alternative glam rock and the shift in style causing them to be not in the intention of being identified with The New Romantic movement by critics however this was denied by the band members themselves. Virgin Records released Japan’s final studio albums, Gentlemen Take Polaroids and Tin Drum, while the group played their final live show on December 16th, 1982. Japan had conflicting creative and personal conflicts and decided to break up during an era that saw them begin to see notable commercial success in their home country of UK and around the world. The group briefly reunited in the year 1991 as Rain Tree Crow and released an album with a self-titled title.

Jansen maintained a Tumblr blog under the username of “Sleepyard” as an additional avenue to publish his photography and answer fan questions, but wrote a post on in April 2016 stating that he would no longer maintain it, citing his displeasure with the platform as a whole. Later in the same month, Jansen re-launched his blog through WordPress.
