Fragasso initially planned to create art-films, and first filming his films on Super8 like Passaggi (1977) along with its sequel Difendimi dalla Notte, with Fragasso saying “In Italy, to be considered important, you must shoot something like that.”. According to Fragasso the screenplay for Il Medium was done specifically for director Silvio Amadio in the year 1975. However, the film didn’t launch until 1979. Fragasso was involved in the screenplays for numerous Italian crime thrillers during the 1970s.
The year was 1986. Fragasso produced a short film by himself, without Mattei called Monster Dog for producer Eduard Sarlui with the help of music legend Alice Cooper. Fragasso and Drudi were also the co-writers of Zombi 3, the follow-up to Lucio Fulci’s Zombi 2, called Zombi 3. Director Fulci was forced to quit the Philippines location before finishing the film, which led to Drudi and Fragasso being required to write and extend the script over the course of one day, with the film’s directing tasks being carried out with Bruno Mattei who was working in the Philippines at the time. Fragasso was able to fly back the next day to help Mattei with filming.
In the mid-1990s, critics suggested there was a resurgence of crime films in Italy going on after the release of The Escort. This new wave included Fragasso’s Palermo – Milan One Way, the box office success of which led to others such as Coppia omicida and the television film Operazione Odissea. Fragasso continued to make several films for both theatrical and television release, culminating in his 2007 sequel to Palermo – Milan One Way which was called Milano Palermo – il ritorno.
Fragasso first met the director Bruno Mattei when Mattei was in the position of assistant editor, and they quickly became friends with one another since they both enjoyed genre movies. In the year 1980, Mattei began a close collaboration with screenwriter Fragasso starting in The True Story of the Nun of Monza (1980) and concluding with a comedic film called Three For One (1990). They worked closely throughout the decade (collaborating on fifteen movies) with Fragasso sometimes taking on the position of the second unit or assistant director. Fragasso has declared that he is an avid fan of splatter movies and said they were “very important to me. The Italian spirit compels us to exaggerate.”
