Rytz was re-elected to the National Council in October 2015, after her term as Bern’s municipal executive. Rytz served as co-president of the Green Party of Switzerland (Die Grunen) from May 2012 to April 2016. She was elected the party’s only president two more years later on 16 April 2016. She ran in 2019 for a seat on the Council of States but was defeated by Hans Stockli, Werner Salzmann.
Rytz served as general secretary of Swiss Federation of Trade Unions from 2001 to 2004. Her focus was on labor law and health, and the free movement of people. Regula Rytz serves as the president of the Cantonal Commission for Gender Mainstreaming (Fachkommission fur die Gleichstellung), and as a board member of Iniziativa da las Alps and Lotschberg initiative committees. She is also a member of Verwaltungsratin (Verwaltungsratin), of the municipal transport services in Biel/Bienne, and a board member of VCS Verkehrs-Club der Schweiz. VCS supports sustainable mobility and encourages optimum interaction among all modes of transport. Regula Rytz was a Thun to Gisela Rytz-Floren-born, a Swiss musician and Rudolf-Rytz an architect. She was a teacher at Thun seminary and taught in the Volksschule public elementary school from 1983 to 1989. Rytz studied history at University of Bern. She graduated in 1997 (Lizentiat), in history, sociology, and constitutional law. Her coop-programs included projects for the educational department (Erziehungsdirektion) of the canton of Bern from 1990 to 1992, and assistance work for Professor Richard Baumlin at the constitutional law seminary (Staatsrechtliches Seminar) in 1992 and 1993. She conducted research on Gewalt im Alltag and organisierte Kriminalitat from 1998 to 2000 as part of a research program at the Swiss National Science Foundation (Nationalfonds), her alma mater.
Rytz was a member of SP and a primary school teacher. He moved from Thun to Bern to study sociology and history. Rytz was a member of the Student/innenrat from 1988 to 1994, the University of Bern’s student council. She organized counter-events for the traditional lectures at the university, revived feminist science (Feministische Wissenschaft), and was a member of Kritische Uni (literally, Critical University), where she “very self-determined, motion- oriented time.” In 2011, she recalls that she had the opportunity to organize substantive discussions without being confined in a rigid political party hierarchy. Rytz was initially a base member when she joined the Green Alliance in 1987. She was also involved as Grunes Bundnis Bern’s political secretary, a region-based section of the Green Party of Switzerland, between 1993 and 1998. She was responsible for strategic and organizational management and also provided technical and policy advice to Therese Frosch (the finance director of Bern). She was elected to the Canton of Bern’s parliament in 1994. Rytz was also involved in several commissions that focused on economic, fiscal, and education policy. Rytz was elected as the state policy commissioner for 2005. She was then elected to the executive (Gemeinderatin), of Bern, where she managed the department Tiefbau, Verkehr und Stadtgrun, which provided municipal civil engineering, transport, and urban green areas. She was reelected in 2008, receiving the most votes among all governmental members. She was responsible for large-scale projects like the reconstruction of Bahnhofplatz and construction of Tram Bern West by 2012.
In November 2019, she entered the race for the 2019 Federal Council election, seeking to turn out Igniazio Cassis. In the 2019 Swiss federal election, the Green and Green Liberal Party made significant gains in the National Council with the Greens becoming the fourth-largest party. Historically, the fourth- largest party in the council is elected to a seat on the Federal council. The three largest parties indicated that they would not support her candidacy. Despite their association on environmental issues, the leader of the more moderate GLP advised Rytz not to pursue the seat. Rytz was defeated in the election with members not wanting defeat the only member of the Swiss-Italian community.
