Mather was appointed to the Glasgow Warriors team as Captain at the end of 2002/03. Mather’s form earned him a late replacement call to the 2003 World Cup Squad. He was one of few outstanding Scottish performers in a disappointing tournament for Scots. He was awarded caps against Fiji, France and Australia and made a quarter-final against Australia. Under the leadership of Mat Williams from Australia, he was a cornerstone of the new Scotland side. However, he suffered injuries against England and France that hampered his ability to play consistently. After a narrow loss to the Barbarians at Murrayfield, Mather was back to full fitness. He then broke his ankle against Queensland in Brisbane five days later in the first Australian tour match. Mather would be his last appearance for Scotland. He chose to quit international rugby in 2005 due to a lack of motivation and depressed with injury. He would then play the rest of the season in Glasgow, before returning to Edinburgh as Director at Rugby at Watsonians. In addition, he would assist his former Glasgow Warriors team as a Lineout analyst.

Cameron George Mather, or “Sarge”, as his colleagues called him, was born in Christchurch New Zealand. He attended St Kentigern School in Auckland and Auckland Grammar School. After leaving school, he joined the University Club in Auckland. At age, he had represented Auckland Province. However, he decided to join the East Coast Bays Club at North Harbour in 1993. He was selected to the North Harbour representative Colts team and was an active member of the championship winning team. His success led to him being selected for the New Zealand colts trials. However, he was not selected for the national team. Mather moved to Edinburgh in 1994 after another successful club season and provincial season, with additional 7’s and 8’s honours.
Mather was awarded a contract by the Scottish Rugby Union in 1996 and was assigned to the Edinburgh Side. Mather was qualified to play for Scotland by his Paternal Grandfather George Scott Urquhart. He was honoured for his gallantry as a young sailor during the Great War. He is buried at Stirling Castle. The Edinburgh Reivers were formed in 1998 when the Edinburgh side was combined with the Border Reivers. Mather traveled to South Africa and Zimbabwe in 1997 with the Scottish side. He had won sevens and international A caps in Dubai, and was also awarded 7’s world cup honours in Hong Kong. In 1998, he toured Australia and played in four of the eight touring matches, scoring tries against Victoria or Queensland. In 1999, he toured South Africa again and was selected for the 1999 rugby international cup squad. He won his first cap against Romania at Hampden Park, Glasgow in August 99. He was awarded caps against Spain, Western Samoa, and in the quarter-final against New Zealand at Murrayfield. His championship debut against France in February 2000 saw him involved with six more nations. Mather joined Leeds Tykes, National Division one at the start of the 2000/01 season. He helped them win promotion and scored the club’s premiership try against Bath at Headingly on August 2001. In his first premiership season, Mather would score another 5. Mather was a constant presence in the Tykes team and a standout player during the Premiership. He won the player of year and players player award in 2003, helping Leeds to achieve its highest league position ever of 5th.
He went on to play over 100 games for the Edinburgh club side helping them land their first Melrose 7’s title for over 60 years in 1996 and lead them to their first Premiership title in 1998 before returning as player coach in 2006 and delivering the Scottish Cup at the first time of asking.
