He was one of few outstanding Scottish performers in a disappointing tournament for Scots. He was awarded caps against Fiji, France and Australia and made a quarter-final against Australia. Under the leadership of Mat Williams from Australia, he was a cornerstone of the new Scotland side. However, he suffered injuries against England and France that hampered his ability to play consistently. After a narrow loss to the Barbarians at Murrayfield, Mather was back to full fitness. He then broke his ankle against Queensland in Brisbane five days later in the first Australian tour match. Mather would be his last appearance for Scotland. He chose to quit international rugby in 2005 due to a lack of motivation and depressed with injury. He would then play the rest of the season in Glasgow, before returning to Edinburgh as Director at Rugby at Watsonians.
