Byron Dafoe is one of the most popular and richest Ice Hockey Player who was born on February 25, 1971 in Worthing, England, United Kingdom. Byron Jaromir Dafoe, a former professional ice hockey goaltender from Canada, was born February 25, 1971. Born in Worthing, England at the age two months, he moved to Comox with his mother, British Columbia, to play hockey. He played in the National Hockey League between 1992 and 2004 for the Washington Capitals and Los Angeles Kings, Boston Bruins, Atlanta Thrashers, and Boston Bruins.
During Dafoe’s time with the Winter Hawks he got into a fight with Olaf Kolzig, a Tri-City Americans goaltender. They would have a friendly rivalry in NHL. Kolzig and Dafoe also had a “friendly fight” on November 28, 1998 when the Boston Bruins faced off against the Washington Capitals. The fight was so intense and all-encompassing that Kolzig and Dafoe were also involved. Dafoe, Kolzig and others laughed as they traded punches.
Dafoe held out for part of the 1999–2000 season during a contract dispute with Bruins general manager Harry Sinden, and in his return suffered injuries, resulting in a regression from his previous year. He spent three more seasons in Boston, and after playing 41 and 45 games the previous two seasons, in 2002 he played 64 games and won a career-best 35 of them, setting himself up nicely for a new contract. However, when Boston was upset by the Montreal Canadiens in the 2002 post season, and the Bruins let Dafoe become a free agent.
That summer, the free agent pool included a lot of top netminders including Mike Richter, Ed Belfour and Curtis Joseph, and while the aforementioned earned new contracts, Dafoe remained a free agent as the 2002-03 season began. Nearly two months into the season, Dafoe agreed to a one-year deal with a player’s option for a second to join the Atlanta Thrashers.
He was promoted to the starter’s position with the Bruins. Jim Carey had been replaced back in Washington. Dafoe was a star in Boston. He played 65 games, won 30 of them and had 6 shutouts. Dafoe was a key player in the Bruins’ return to the playoffs the following season and helped them win a postseason series. In 1998-1999, he posted career-best numbers with a 1.99 goals against average (and a.926 saving percentage). He was third in voting for Vezina Trophy and was named to NHL Second All-Star Team. Curtis Joseph came in second.
