Mattern played in collegiate soccer during her time at the University of South Carolina where she was two-time All-American as well as a freshman All- American. In 2009 she was a unanimous first team selection after securing All- America nominations from the NSCAA, Soccer America and the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Organization. She was named 2007. SEC Defensive Player of Year and was the first sophomore in the history of the conference to receive the award and she has been a four-time All-SEC selection. In her final year she was the captain for a team that was ranked at No. 9 in the nation . She also was the leader in the SEC in all defensive categories with 15 shutouts, and a place for the NCAA Round of 16.
Mattern was chosen by the Atlanta Beat as the first selection in the third round and the 21st overall pick for the 2010 WPS Draft. Mattern was Beat’s second selection and was the fourth defensive player overall chosen during the WPS Draft. In late 2010 , she was a part of in the Charlotte Lady Eagles.
