In Dargaville, New Zealand, Pumipi played junior football with Northland Rugby Union before switching to the rugby league and joining the Northcote Tigers. Pumipi was later signed by the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks. The year 2006 was the first time Pumipi participated in his club’s Junior Kiwis Under-16s team.
Between 2008 and 2009 Pumipi was a member of an organization called the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks’ NYC team before joining the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs mid-season in 2009 and continuing to play until 2010.
