Macknik and Martinez-Conde are the pioneers in the study of the techniques used in stage magic in a neuroscience-based viewpoint. They’ve proposed that magicians and neuroscientists have numerous interests that overlap and that both fields should work together for mutual benefit. Macknik along with Martinez-Conde can be both credited with establishing the discipline of Neuromagic as a field of study in science devoted to uncovering the neural mechanisms that underlie the perception of illusions. Martinez-Conde and Macknik invented”Neuromagic” as a term “Neuromagic” in a 2008 Scientific American article. They’ve conducted studies together with some of the world’s most famous magicians, such as Teller of Penn & Teller, Mac King, James Randi, and Apollo Robbins. Stephen Louis Macknik (/”‘ m ae, KNI k / MAK -nik, born August 9 in 1968) is an American neuroscientist and scientist. He is Professor of Ophthalmology, Neurology, and Pharmacology and Physiology at State University of New York, Downstate Medical Center, where he is the director of the Laboratory of Translational Neuroscience. He was the director of labs previously in the Barrow Neurological Institute and University College London. He is most well- known for his research regarding illusions, consciousness and illusions, attentional misdirection as well as cerebral blood flow.
The year 2001 was the time that Macknik made the move to United Kingdom, as a Lecturer in Ophthalmology as well as a Laboratory Director for the Laboratory of Behavioral Neurophysiology at University College London. In 2004 after which he returned to United States as an Assistant Professor, and later Associate Professor of the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, Arizona, where he headed the Laboratory of the Behavioral Neurophysiology. Then, in 2014, he relocated back to Brooklyn, NY, as Professor of Ophthalmology, Neurology, and Physiology and Pharmacology, at SUNY Downstate Medical Center, where he is the director of the Laboratory of Translational Neuroscience. He is as an editor of the journal scientific PeerJ.
Macknik’s research focuses on the neural bases of perceptual and cognitive illusions. He has studied visual masking illusions, the wakes and spokes illusion, and various illusions in stage magic. He writes the Illusions column for Scientific American: Mind.
