Billy Dutton is an utility forward who is able to play as a flanker, lock or as a number eight.

As of 2015 Dutton played for amateur team Old Selbornians in the 2015 SARU Community Cup, scoring a try in the final against champions and then the runners-up Rustenburg Impala. Dutton was called up for his team the Border Bulldogs shortly after the closing of the SARU Community Cup and – after a four-year absence , was back in provincial play. He made five appearances for his team during the 2015 Vodacom Cup, which included an appearance on the bench for their sole win of the tournament that they won, beating The Boland Cavaliers 29-5. He was included as a player during this year’s Border Bulldogs’ 2015 Currie Cup qualifying campaign. He after having been an ineffective substitute in their win of 20-13 against the eventual champions Griquas was able to make the Currie Cup debut in their match against the Griffons in Welkom. He also made an appearance during the competition, during their game against the Leopards in the final match of the season. Border due to finishing sixth in the standings and qualifying for 2015’s Currie Cup First Division. Dutton was a solid member of the team for that event by playing each of their five matches wearing their number-eight shirt. However, his team went through another disappointing season, losing their first four matches , before returning to win to beat Boland Cavaliers 44-20 in their final game during the campaign.

He also made two appearances in the top class of his team the Border Bulldogs during the 2011 Vodacom Cup competition, coming as a substitute during matches with those of the Griffons along with the Pumas. In 2011, the team also announced the start of a second-tier competition in addition to the Varsity Cup, called the Varsity Shield. Dutton was a part of his team the UFH Blues in this competition between 2011 and 2014. He was as well as captaining the team during the 2013 season.

Dutton was a member of his first team at the Border Bulldogs academy following his graduation from high school. He was a part of the Border U21 side at the 2010 Provincial Championship, where he played in six games.

In 2010 he was selected in the Border Bulldogs squad for the 2010 Vodacom Cup. He made his debut in the class on the 26th of February, 2010 playing on the bench during an 8-69 loss to the Sharks XV team in Durban in the opening game for the year. He played again at the Under-21 level in 2010 with five appearances, scoring a goal in a game against the Pumas U21s.
