Ben Herring (born 14 March 1980) is a professional coach in rugby who is currently the Head Coach of the Otago rugby team. Herring has had the privilege of coaching two national teams, Canada and Japan, as well as two Super Franchises Highlanders as well as Sunwolves.
Herring received the award of Leicester Tigers newcomer of the year award in the year 2008. After more than 30 Premiership and Heineken Cup appearances, Herring was hit with a string of concussions that were so gnarly, it caused him to retire prematurely from the sport in January of 2009.
Herring was employed by Rugby Canada to coach national representative teams both in 15s and 7s. Herring was assistant to Kieran Crowley with the national 15s team, and Geraint John with the 7s. The national 7s side reached 6th in world its highest ever world ranking. Coaching alongside John Tait, the national woman’s 7s team consistently ranked top 3 in the world.
Due to a growing family, Herring returned to New Zealand and became assistant coach for Otago, and a specialist coach for the Highlanders. Jamie Josephs appointment to coach the Japanese national side, saw him take Tony Brown (attack) and Ben Herring (defense) as his two assistant coaches. Herring was also appointed assistant coach to the newly formed Japanese Super team, the Sunwolves, in order to create alignment between the national and Super franchise. Japan exceeded expectation in 2016 finishing the November internationals with a last minute drop goal loss to Wales at a sold out Principality Stadium.
In 2004, he joined The Hurricanes in 2004 and the Vodafone Wellington Lions replacing the leaving Kupu Vanisi. A knee injury restricted him to six Super rugby matches during his first campaign as a member of the Hurricanes. He was able to return to play a prominent role in both capital sides, playing an unofficial loose forward trio along with Jerry Collins and Rodney So’oialo. Following notable highlights in his games with the British and Irish Lions, and NPC last appearances Herring signed a contract with European huges Leicester Tigers in 2007.

Herring was a professional footballer from 2001 until 2009 between 2001 and 2009 in his home countries, New Zealand and England before his departure due to concussion. Herring was an experienced flanker on the open side and the specialist in turnover. He began his professional playing career in rugby when he moved to Auckland in New Zealand to Dunedin to pursue the degree of Physical Education from the University of Otago. The form earned him the Super 12 contract with the Highlanders in 2002. Another season with Southland was followed, and at the close of 2003, he had scored seven tries over 22 games.
Herring was appointed assistant coach at Leicester Tigers by director of rugby Richard Cockerill. He had over 60 games as coach, including Heineken Cup semifinals and winning two Premiership titles 2008–09, 2009–10, and beaten finalist 2010–11.
