Mather was born in Ince in Makerfield, located in Wigan, Lancashire, on 15 January 1973. He relocated to Blackpool as a young man as his father accepted the position of a teacher in Lytham St. Annes and then was a student at the Arnold School, where he quickly became a professional union rugby player. In 1991, he was picked as a member of the England Schools rugby union team that lost the Grand Slam against Wales. The other notable players on that team included the future World Cup winners Matt Dawson and Richard Hill.
Mather was picked for England at the 1995 World Cup Final on the reserve bench, but he did not participate as Australia took the win and kept the Cup.
Mather signed for Castleford Tigers in October 1997 following the financial problems of the Western Reds. He stated that Stuart Raper had spoken to him whilst out in Perth for the World Club Challenge match and convinced him Castleford was the club for him. He played for Castleford for just one season before making a big money switch to rugby union.
Mather joined Sale Sharks in 1998 on a two-year deal mainly funded by the RFU. It was the beginning of a period of recruitment from rugby league in which the RFU sought to bring some of the best talents to play for England. Mather did not have the best of times with Sale and played for the club until his contract release in 2000. During that time Sale struggled to make an impact in the Premiership, and Mather never lived up to the hype that surrounded his transfer.
Despite his schoolboy achievement, Mather decided that his future was in rugby league . He joined Wigan Warriors. Wigan Warriors in 1992. He was a right- center player in the defeat of the team by 2-33 Castleford during the 1993-1994 Regal Trophy Final at Elland Road, Leeds on 22 January 1994. He was a part of the domestic success at Wigan and was part of the team that won the Challenge Cup of 1994 . He was also being part of the team which defeated Brisbane Broncos Brisbane Broncos in the 1994 World Club Challenge at Brisbane’s ANZ Stadium. The relationship between Mather and Wigan became tense after Mather claimed that his contract was invalid and null due to the circumstances under the time the contract was made. Mather ultimately took Wigan to court after they were unable to release his registration without paying a transfer fee in the wake of signing an agreement to Western Reds in Australia. Mather was unsuccessful in his legal challenge.
