Antanas Varnelis Biography

Antanas Varnelis is one of the most popular and richest Killer who was born on January 1, 1971 in Dadotkai, Lithuania. Varnelis is born the 1st of January 1971, from the community located in Dadotkai [lt] within the Telsiai District, in a family of six other youngsters (three brothers and 3 girls). It was an unstable family as Both parents were drinkers and all their children, even young Antanas were sent to different residences. Varnelis was placed at an orphanage located in Viesvile. He was portrayed as shy and unsociable who often ran away and wandering about the neighborhood. He was at risk of crime and social behaviour, and at 11 years of age the school he attended was an specialized boarding school specifically designed for teens who were difficult located in Gelgaudiskis. Varnelis was a drinker and smoker of cigarettes. He picked on people less able than himself, but was kind to those more powerful than him. He continued to steal and ran away, and displayed no aptitude for academics. After leaving the school the state offered Varnelis with a job and a dormitory. Then he was attempting to learn at an agricultural college located in Kudirkos Naumiestis, but soon left the school.

In August 1987 aged 16 years old, Varnelis was first sentenced for taking 12 beer bottles along with a baby chicken out of a the grocery store. He was examined at the psychiatric facility situated in Ziegzdriai [lt] where it was determined that he had a mild intellectual disability and pronounced mental illness, but was deemed competent to be tried. He was sentenced to two years and three months in an educational colony however, the sentence was delayed. A few months later when he was robbed by a passing motorist and stole his wallet and was sentenced for 4 years of imprisonment in Pravieniskes. The court released him on the 14th of January in 1992.

Antanas Varnelis (1971 – September 28, 1994) was a Lithuanian serial killer who killed six people and attempted to kill three more between July and December 1992, in several municipalities around the country (Kelmė, Šiauliai, Raseiniai, Šakiai and Jurbarkas). He targeted lonely elderly people living in remote villages and robbed their houses to pay for his alcohol addiction. He was later executed for these crimes, the fifth of seven people executed before the capital punishment was abolished in Lithuania.

On November 14, near the village of Pakražantis [lt] in the Kelmė District, Varnelis killed for the 4th time – another lonely pensioner, from whom he stole a bicycle, a raincoat, a coffee grinder, hair spray, several bottles of homemade wine and groceries. The body of the 68-year-old woman, who was hit a total of nine times with an axe, was found a week later covered by straws. Varnelis lived in the victim’s house for at least a day after the murder. The police arrested five suspects, but they provided an alibi and were released. Between November 20 and 21, near Raudėnai [lt] in the Šiauliai District, Varnelis broke into an empty house but did not find anything of value. He then separately attacked two villagers with an axe – a 48-year-old man who was robbed of his motorbike and a 69-year-old woman who was robbed of 6,000 talonas. Both survived the attacks.

After his release Varnelis had a relationship with a friend at the orphanage, but then he argued with him and retreated to his older brother Pranas who worked at an unnamed property in Gelgaudiskis. In the farm, Antanas, according to witnesses, was a parasite who lived off the expenses of his brother and drinking alcohol. The owners of the farm soon became bored of Antanas his behavior and both Antanas as well as his brother were evicted. In Gelgaudiskis in June 1992, with threats of knives Varnelis attempted to raped a 13-year-old local resident. He also took bread as well as 300 rubles of her.

When he learned that he was sought, Varnelis changed his tactics. He now only moved during the late at night, and would sleep in abandoned buildings or barns throughout the day. He was heading toward Vilnius and from there he had planned to flee. In the evening of December 21, 1992 in the town in Muniskiai [lt] located in the Kaunas District, Varnelis was identified by the locals due to his tattoos.

He then got an offer to work alongside him on the farm. In the area, he was referred to among the locals as a young man who frequently went to clubs and had a few girls. In the evening of October 31st, Varnelis attacked once again and broke into the home of an elderly woman. He struck the victim with an axe on the head multiple times and then took the home. The victim passed away within a week in a hospital, but he did not regain consciousness. Varnelis was almost arrested on the spot: as he was in the kitchen cooking eggs, a friend of the victim appeared to inquire about the elderly man. Varnelis was able convincing him the man was helping the man with household chores. As the family member was talking with the neighbor, Varnelis escaped to the forest, hiding to observe the chaos.

However, on February 1, 1994, the Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court of Lithuania, chaired by Vytautas Greičius [lt] , found the 23-year-old Varnelis guilty of all charges and sentenced him to be executed by shooting. His clemency petition was rejected by the President of Lithuania Algirdas Brazauskas on September 16, and Varnelis was executed on September 28, 1994 in Vilnius. He was buried in the Karveliškės Cemetery [lt] in the section for those unclaimed by relatives.
