Hogg remained an influential figure as Scotland’s performance improved through

2008. He played in both Tests in Argentina, where they won a series draw. Then, in the autumn internationals at Murrayfield, Hogg was defeated by South Africa and the All Blacks.

He played for Watsonian RFC in the 92nd Langholm Sevens competition. Despite being tipped to win the tournament and being 2009–10 ‘Kings of Sevens’, Watsonians were beaten by a young Edinburgh University side.

In Sept 2012, Newcastle coach Dean Richards, petitioned for Hogg’s return to the national fold following several outstanding performances at the start of the season, including a hat-trick of tries against London Scottish.

Following his debut, Hogg quickly secured a place in the Scotland team. He was often seen playing openside to accommodate Simon Taylor. His support play led to many of his tries in the national team. Hogg was selected to Scotland’s 2007 Rugby World Cup team. He also became the first forward from Scotland in 20 years to score a hat trick of tries in one match when he scored a treble in the 42-0 win over Romania in September 2007.

Hogg signed his first professional contract with Edinburgh Rugby in 2002. He went on to become a regular on the first team as well as an offfield leader. After major restructuring of the club, Hogg was named Edinburgh’s inaugural team captain in 2007. He was a key player in the club’s upheaval, and played every match in his final season.

Hogg, then 21 years old, made his debut against Wales in Cardiff in 2004. A particularly disastrous match for Scotland that they lost 13–26 where many of the players failed to perform including Hogg who had been moved to blindside due to a reshuffle of the pack caused by injury to Nathan Hines.
