Hickel attended the North American Hockey Academy for her entire high school career (2007 to 2011). She was a captain in her senior season at the NAHA. She won the Junior Women’s Hockey League Championship (JWHL) twice with the NAHA team in 2008 and 2011.

Hickel scored the team’s first goal. Kelli Stack, Baiwei Yu and Baiwei Yu were both awarded the assists. Hickel was able to return to Alaska during the season. The Kunlun Red Star played in an exhibition match in Anchorage on January 5, 2018. Hickel ended the Red Star’s season with 38 points and 12 goals. Her 26 assists were the most among all skaters in CWHL’s regular season.
