She was the executive producer and writer of a major revival for the BBC of the British TV drama series Upstairs, Downstairs. She co-produced and wrote an adaptation of the Call the Midwife trilogy by Jennifer Worth in 2011. This series was a huge success and attracted record viewership for the channel. In subsequent years, a second and third series were aired. The BBC announced in February 2014 that they had commissioned a Christmas Special for 2014 and a fourth series.

A fifth series was commissioned for 2016, shortly after series four was done filming. On 23 November 2016, the BBC announced a three-year deal with Neal Street Productions, commissioning a seventh, eighth and ninth series, all with Christmas specials. The new commission will keep the series on air until at least 2020.

In January 2019, Thomas was presented with the Outstanding Contribution to Writing Award by the Writers’ Guild of Great Britain for her body of professional work.

For her work on Cranford, she was awarded the UK Royal Television Society’s Best Writer Award in March 2008. She was awarded the UK Broadcasting Press Guild Awards’ Best Writer Award in April 2008 for her work on Cranford and Ballet Shoes. She was also nominated for a Primetime Emmy and two BAFTA TV Awards Cranford. She was awarded the Writers Guild of Great Britain award in November 2008 for Best TV Series. She was nominated for a Primetime Emmy in 2011 for Upstairs Downstairs. In recognition of her contributions to the industry, she was awarded the Technicolor Writing Award by the UK’s annual ‘Women in Film and Television Awards’ in December 2012.
