Yuniesky Betancourt, a Cuban professional baseball shortstop, was born January 31, 1982. Betancourt played in Major League Baseball (MLB), for the Milwaukee Brewers and Seattle Mariners as well as the Kansas City Royals. Before he left Cuba, he played in the Cuban National Series with Villa Clara. After having defected from Cuba in 2011, he returned to Cuba’s national baseball system in 2019. He did not play a single game for Villa Clara in 2019, however. He is known as “Riquimbili” in Cuba.

Betancourt was a league leader in batting with runners on in scoring position and the game-winning RBI in 2007. Ex-Mariner Mike Blowers called Betancourt “unreal” in a 2007 game. He said that Betancourt was “unreal” when batting in close games with runners. This is contrary to his career statistics. On August 11, 2007, he scored his first grand slam with a 7-6 victory against the Chicago White Sox.

In 2009, he had the lowest on-base percentage of any starter in the major leagues, at .274, and the lowest slugging percentage in the American League with .351.

On July 10, 2009, he was acquired by the Kansas City Royals along with a portion of his salary for Minor League pitchers Derrick Saito and Dan Cortes.
