Betancourt played in Major League Baseball (MLB), for the Milwaukee Brewers and Seattle Mariners as well as the Kansas City Royals. Before he left Cuba, he played in the Cuban National Series with Villa Clara. After having defected from Cuba in 2011, he returned to Cuba’s national baseball system in 2019. He did not play a single game for Villa Clara in 2019, however. He is known as “Riquimbili” in Cuba.
Betancourt was a league leader in batting with runners on in scoring position and the game-winning RBI in 2007. Ex-Mariner Mike Blowers called Betancourt “unreal” in a 2007 game. He said that Betancourt was “unreal” when batting in close games with runners. This is contrary to his career statistics. On August 11, 2007, he scored his first grand slam with a 7-6 victory against the Chicago White Sox.
In 2009, he had the lowest on-base percentage of any starter in the major leagues, at .274, and the lowest slugging percentage in the American League with .351.
On July 10, 2009, he was acquired by the Kansas City Royals along with a portion of his salary for Minor League pitchers Derrick Saito and Dan Cortes.
His fielding was Betancourt’s first calling card. He was a great fielder in his first few seasons. His skills included excellent range, speed, soft hands and hand-eye coordination. He also had a strong throwing arm that allowed him to throw accurately. In a fan poll, he was voted one of the best baseball fielders. He made many great fielding plays in 2007, but he also experienced some wild throwing that season. He made 18 errors in 2007’s first half, almost the same number as his total of 20 in 2006. In the second half of 2007, he made just 5 errors. He was a poor defense in 2008 with many fielding metrics indicating that he was one of the worst shortstops.

His first career was spent in Cuban leagues, including Villa Clara from the Serie Nacional. He was the Villa Clara’s star second baseman and was the Cuban league’s fastest second baseman. In December 2003, he left Cuba via a speedboat and reached Mexico where he played briefly before signing with the Seattle Mariners scouts Bob Engle & Patrick Guerrero.
