The 1990s in Korea became a culture of consumption. A disillusionment swept away the hope and optimism that had once characterized the country. Yang’s work was also affected. The Hidden Flower, which she wrote in 1992, was in part autobiographical. It told her story of a woman searching for new hope after the destruction of her old ideals. Yang’s protagonist, in The Road to Cheonma Tobs, struggles with past traumas and his current powerlessness. The Hidden Flower and The Road to Cheonma Tombs can be found in a collection that is named after the latter story.
Yang’s first work was 1987 Wonmi–dong saramdeul (Neighbors of Wonmi–dong), which illustrated the alienation and isolation of small towns following modernization. The English title of this work, A Distant and Beautiful Place was published. In the 1990s Yang’s fiction became increasingly personal, with a series of popular works including Contradictions (or ‘Mosun), which was the most-sold Korean novel of 1998.
