Giorgi Karkarashvili is one of the most popular and richest Military Personnel who was born on October 31, 1966 in Tbilisi, Georgia. Giorgi (Gia) Karkarashvili (Georgian: giorgi [gia] Qarqarashvili ) (born on the 31st of October the 31st of October, 1966) is a Georgian politician and former Major General who was the Georgian Minister of Defense from May 1993 until March 1994. A ex- Soviet military captain in the army, he served as a prominent military commanding officer throughout the war of the civil rights as well as battles against secessionists in Abkhazia as well as South Ossetia in the 1990s. A gunshot injury sustained during the attack of 1995 in Moscow caused him to be severely disabled. He was a member of the Parliament of Georgia from 1999 until 2004. He is currently a part of Our Georgia – Free Democrats party , which is led by Irakli alasania.
In August 1992 the increasing tensions in Abkhazia became fighting. Karkarashvili was made the commander of the Georgian forces in the regional capital Sukhumi. The telecast address he gave was that was broadcast (in Russian) by the local Sukhumi channel on the 25th of August 1992, where he warned the leaders of the secessionists to “if 100,000 Georgians die, then all 97,000 [Abkhazians] on your side will be killed” was a source of much debate. His words were cited in various ways in various sources, and were interpreted from people on the Abkhaz party as an attempt to purge this region Abkhaz population. A few years later, in an interview with Tbilisi’s Maestro TV, Karkarashvili claimed that the address he broadcast was altered to appear as if it was a threat to eliminate the Abkhaz. “By the way Alexander Ankvab, who is now prime minister of Abkhazia, was present there when my address was being recorded and he can confirm my words,” Karkarashvili said, explaining that Ankvab was detained by Georgian forces, but was later released on his own instructions.
During the war in Abkhazia, the young general gained reputation of an energetic and dynamic commander, for which he was popular with the military. He was frequently critical of Shevardnadze’s policies and displayed a tendency to independent decision-making. Nevertheless, in May 1993, Shevardnadze made him Minister of Defense, partly for his desire to sideline Tengiz Kitovani, the self-minded field commander and Karkarashvili’s predecessor as minister. Karkarashvili attempted to make the Georgian military more integrated and disciplined. He named the Russian and Israeli armies to be models on which to build the Georgian military.
In September 1994, Karkarashvili went to Moscow and enrolled into the Russian General Staff Academy. Early on January 25, 1995, Karkarashvili and his former deputy Major-General Paata Datuashvili were assaulted by three masked gunmen near the Academy dormitory in Moscow. Datuashvili was killed on the spot. Karkarashvili – heavily wounded in head – survived, but was permanently disabled and left in wheelchair. The most popular explanation of the attack was that it was ordered by those interested in elimination of key witnesses of the 1991 coup and the Abkhaz war.
Karkarashvili was the commander of Georgian forces during the entire conflict in Abkhazia. The first major defeat at Gagra in the fall of 1992 when Abkhaz forces along with the allies North Caucasian militants under Shamil Basayev’s leadership took over the town by surprise that was able to stop Karkarashvili’s quick-witted counter-attack. The battle killed Karkarashvili’s brother Gocha. Karkarashvili was in a position to defend Sukhumi up to September of 1993 after which Sukhumi was besieged by Georgian troops, now stricken by fighting between rival factions were forced to withdraw from Abkhazia.

Born in Tbilisi the capital of Soviet Georgia, Karkarashvili graduated from the Tbilisi Higher Artillery Command School in 1987. He was a member of the Soviet military in East Germany, Afghanistan, and Georgia until the beginning of January in 1991, after which he resigned his position as a captain. He also recruited the Georgian deserters of the Soviet army to join the unit of paramilitary Tetri Artsivi (“White Eagle”) which was then incorporated in Georgia’s National Guard of Georgia. Karkarashvili was appointed the commander of Georgia’s National Guard within Tbilisi. He participated in combat in the fight against South Ossetian militias in the early part of 1991. He was promoted to the rank of colonel.
On December 11, 1991 Karkarashvili was a member of the Tengiz Kitovani-led rebellious military faction in an unconstitutional coup against the president Zviad Gamsakhurdia and led an uprising against the government’s buildings that culminated with Gamsakhurdia’s departure to Tbilisi at the beginning of January. Karkarashvili was then in charge of a unit from the regime postcoup – called the Military Council – which operated against the Gamsakhurdia supporters in the western part of Georgia and led the march of the National Guard detachment into Abkhazia as a demonstration of strength to stop secessionist sentiments in the region. As the war re-emerged within South Ossetia in May 1992, Karkarashvili was put in charge of Georgian forces, which reclaimed a number of ethnic Georgian villages and awarded the 26-year-old commander of the force the rank of major general. Then he resigned due to his displeasure with the Russian proposal to accept conditions of the peace agreement.
From October to November 1993, Karkarashvili took command of the government forces in a brief civil war reincited by Gamsakhurdia’s attempt to regain power. In February 1994, he resigned his position in the government, citing Shevardnadze’s decision to bring Georgia into the Commonwealth of Independent States, legalize the Russian military bases in Georgia, and to appoint Igor Giorgadze to state security ministry. He was later implicated in an embezzlement scandal and accused of supplying classified military information to the Abkhaz and Russian commanders during the war.
