Wu was first noticed after she took home the 1996 China Olympic Trials in a world-leading 2:12.87 beating the 1992 Olympic winner Lin Li into second place. She also came in 2nd place on the podium in the 400 IM with a stout 4:41.20. Similar to many of her fellow athletes she failed to qualify for her attempt at the Atlanta Games, failing to make it to the finals of the Medley events. If she had re-run her trial times in Atlanta she might have been a gold medalist for the 200 IM and silver in the 400. Actually the 200 IM time was nearly one second quicker over Michelle Smith’s win time from Atlanta (2:13.93) and was ranked as the top overall for 1996.
A year after an Olympics, Wu set a world record of 2:09.72 at the 1997 Chinese National Games, where she also finished second overall in the 400 IM (4:36.28 The event ended up being won by Chen Yan in a world record of 4:34.79) and third in the 200 back (2:10.71) and 200 fly (2:10.45). She then won in the 200 IM at the 1998 World Championships in Perth, Australia with the fastest time of her career (2:10.88) Also, she was fourth on the 200 fly (2:10.22 and was the only Chinese swimmer to achieve an individual best in Perth) as well as the 400 IM (4:40.16). After winning her time dropped substantially, but she did manage to take home her 200 IM gold medal at in 1998 at the Asian Games in Bangkok, Thailand (2:15.12). She also participated in 1998’s Short Course Worlds in Hong Kong but failed to medal.
Consequently, Wu Yanyan’s world record, which stood for over 10.5 years, is considered a tainted one. The American Katie Hoff, who specialises in the individual medley, stated that erasing the record is “my one and only goal”. Eventually, it was Australian Stephanie Rice who lowered Wu’s record to 2:08.92 on March 25, 2008 at the 2008 Australian Swimming Championships. Hoff bettered the World mark later that same year, at the USA Olympic Trials.
