Wilbrod “Willie” Desjardins (born on 11 February 1957) is an Canadian professional hockey player and coach. He is the head director and coach of the Western Hockey League’s Medicine Hat Tigers. He also served as an NHL head coach for the Vancouver Canucks from 2014 to 2017 and was the interim head coach of the Los Angeles Kings for the 2018-19 season. In July of 2017 He was appointed head of coaching of Canada’s male team for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
As of 2009, Desjardins was an assistant coach for the Team Canada’s World Junior Gold medal team under the direction of head coach Pat Quinn and alongside fellow assistant coaches Guy Boucher and Dave Cameron. Desjardins was director of the Team Canada’s World Junior Ice Hockey Championships team.
From 2010 to 2012, Desjardins served as the associate head coach of the Dallas Stars of the National Hockey League before being selected as the head coach of their AHL team in Cedar Park, Texas in June 2012. On June 17, 2014, he led his Texas Stars team to their first Calder Cup Championship.
On July 25, 2017, he was named head coach of Canada’s men’s team at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, with his university head coach Dave King as an assistant. In December 2017, he led Team Canada to gold at the Spengler Cup in Davos.
When he was appointed from the Medicine Hat Tigers, Desjardins played a key role in the Tigers making their debut playoff run in the span of five seasons during the 2002-03 season. This led them to an Memorial Cup appearance and their fourth WHL title in the 2003-04 season and an record 96 points Eastern Conference regular season champion season in 2004-05. Desjardins began his career in hockey with his home league, the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) for the Moose Jaw Canucks from 1971 until 1974. He then split his 1974-75 season among the Moose Jaw Canucks and the Swift Current Broncos (WHL). He was a player with the Western Canada Hockey League (WCHL) for the Lethbridge Broncos from 1975 through 1977. He continued his junior hockey career by pursuing studies at the University of Saskatchewan and played with the Saskatchewan Huskies under then head coach Dave King, serving as captain of the 1982-83 University of Saskatchewan Huskies hockey team that took home the Canadian university championship after losing two national championships during previous years. King suggested the team for the job of Alex Andjelic, head coach of Vissers Nijmegen in the Netherlands. Desjardins played the 1983-84 year in Nijmegen and was able to win as captain, the first Dutch championship with the club.
Desjardins was a coaching professional at University of Calgary in 1985 as an assistant coach. He was promoted to head coach in 1989. He later worked with for the Seibu Bears in Japan. Then, he went back to Canada and was appointed head coaching the Saskatoon Blades, replacing Donn Clark at the end of 1998-97 season.
