In October of this year, Kerslake became Chair of the Board of Governors at Sheffield Hallam University. Then, in December of 2017, Kerslake announced his resignation as the Chair of the King’s College Hospital Trust in protest against what he called “dire NHS funding problems” and called for “a fundamental rethink (of )… the way that the NHS is funded and organised”. Soon after, news reports emerged that he was reportedly requested to step down from the Chair of NHS Improvement two days previously due to the trust’s “poor financial performance”.

He continued to serve as Permanent Secretary in the Department for Communities and Local Government. In December 2014, he was appointed Chair of the King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust to start in June of 2015. He was officially introduced as Life peer at the Crossbench at the House of Lords on 17 March 2015.

Robert Walter Kerslake, Baron Kerslake FAcSS (born 28 February 1955) is a British retired senior civil employee. He was the head of the Home Civil Service, after the resignation of the previous head of the cabinet secretary Sir Gus O’Donnell on 31 December 2011, until September 2014.

Kerslake became an associate Member of the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy and was later appointed to various positions with the councils of London before becoming the Chief Director of Hounslow, the London Borough of Hounslow. He later relocated to Sheffield to assume the position as Chief Executive for Sheffield City Council from 1997. In 2008-2010, Kerslake was chief executive of the Homes and Communities Agency; In September of 2010, Kerslake was named the as the Permanent Secretary for the Department for Communities and Local Government. In December 2014, he received the appointed chair of King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust which will begin in June 2015.
