In 1999, he joined in 1999 the Hull Kingston Rovers who played in the Northern Ford Premiership, the division beneath that of the Super League. He was appointed captain in the year 2000 before leaving at the end of the 2002 season.
In 1997, he was a member of his team Sheffield Eagles in the Super League competition. Taewa was a centre player in the Sheffield Eagles’ 17-8 victory against Wigan during 1998’s Challenge Cup Final during Super League III at Wembley Stadium, London on Saturday , May 2nd, 1998.

Whetu was born in his home on the West Coast, New Zealand and started playing in the rugby league in the country; all levels up to his West Coast Representative side. In 1987, he joined his debut in the New Zealand under 17’s training team and made his debut in the West Coast rugby union side. Taewa was a member of the junior New Zealand team in the year 1988. In 1989, he moved to Christchurch and was a member of his local club, the Hallswell club. In 1989, when he made his debut on part of the New Zealand national rugby league team and was part of their tour of Great Britain. From 1990 until 1993, He was a part of the very successful Canterbury team of the era and was again a part of the Kiwis during the 1993 tour to Great Britain and France. He played in four match for West Coast and 37 games for Canterbury. He was a part of the year 1992’s Pacific Cup for the New Zealand Maori team. In 1993, he was invited to play in the Auckland Invitational XIII side that was drawn 16-all by his team the Balmain Tigers.
In 1994, he joined in 1994 with the Auckland Warriors who were to become a new team in the Australian Rugby League premiership. He relocated to Auckland and was a part of The Counties Manukau Heroes in the Lion Red Cup that year and was also a part of Auckland at Auckland’s Rugby League Cup challenge. In 1995, he played on the team that played the initial run-on with the Warriors in their first game with the Brisbane Broncos. In 1996, he was dismissed from the team and joined in the North Queensland Cowboys. Taewa traveled to PNG in 1996 along with his team, the New Zealand Maori.
In 2003 he was an assistant coach for Hull Kingston Rovers before he returned home to New Zealand. Taewa left Hull KR after a family friend fell ill in New Zealand. He now resides in Cromwell.
