In the season 2008-09, O’Neill received his first NHL recall on the 27th of March in 2009. The player had his NHL debut with the Avalanche on the same day, playing in an 4-1 loss against the Vancouver Canucks. The team sent him back for Lake Erie Monsters on April 4, 2009. O’Neill was selected at 115th overall during the 2004 NHL Entry Draft by the New York Islanders. He was originally of the Green Bay Gamblers of the USHL He was selected to represent Canada in the World U18 Championships in 2004. Then he committed for four seasons of playing collegiate playing at Notre Dame culminating in a conference championship in 2007.
O’Neill was signed as an unrestricted free agent with The Colorado Avalanche on August 20 the 20th of August, 2007. O’Neill made his first professional appearance during the 2007-08 season of the Avalanche’s affiliate team, named the Lake Erie Monsters. O’Neill played the majority of the season with the Monsters prior to being assigned by the Johnstown Chiefs of the ECHL to play in their playoffs.
O’Neill was not retained by the Avalanche and was rendered a free agent at season’s end. Unable to attract an NHL offer prior to the 2010–11 season, O’Neill accepted a try-out to the reigning AHL Champions, the Hershey Bears, training camp but failed to attain a contract.
