Wang Nan (Chinese: Wang Nan Pinyin: Wang Nan ; born on October 23, 1978, at Fushun, Liaoning) is a female Chinese table tennis player from Liaoning. Wang continued to be the world’s number one according to the ITTF ranking system from January 1999 through November. Wang is left-handed, and started playing table tennis at seven-years old. Her specific skills include shifting the position for the ball in rallies, and her loop drive, aswell her impressive speed. Wang is the captain of the women’s table tennis team from China since Deng Yaping’s retirement.

Wang Nan attended 2003 World Table Tennis Championships in Paris. This was the fourth time she has represented China. She was awarded three gold medals for singles, doubles and mixed doubles. Of special interest was that she won both doubles and singles championships to win for the 3rd time in succession record-breaking feat that is difficult to break even in the near future. Many didn’t anticipate her accomplishments before the event started, however, her three medals showed that she is still among the best players around the world.

Four years later at the 2008 Summer Olympics she made it to the Women’s Final yet again, this time losing out to Zhang Yining, 8-11, 13–11, 11–8, 11–8, 11–3. She did, however, win the team gold for the host country.

However, at 2002, at the 2002 Asian Games in Busan she was eliminated in two finals in individual and teams but did not take home any gold medals. A lot of people have criticized her behavior and said that she was uninterested and unconfident. There were rumors that she would go into retirement because her talents were waning and she wasn’t able to be competitive on the global stage.
