Maia Ciobanu was a Romanian citizen who was born in Bucharest. She studied at Conservatory Ciprian Porumbescu. She studied composition with Dan Constantinescu, Myriam Marbe, and piano with Aurora Ienei. She also studied with Stefan Niculescu and Mircea Chiriac. She attended the Darmstadt summer course in 1980, where she studied composition with Gerard Grisey and Hans Peter Haller. 1995 was her first year at the Swedish Academy of Music, Gothenburg.
Ciobanu, the Group for Alternative Contemporary Music’s musical director, has been with us since 1992. She was made a professor at Bucharest Theatre and Film School in 1993. In addition to teaching courses on contemporary Romanian musical styles at music academies at Gothenburg (1995), Cologne (1996), and at the Pedagogical College of Rorschach in 1997, she also taught at the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland (2000).
