The Economist, The Financial Times and The Washington Post all listed God and Gold as one of the best non-fiction books of its year.

An active faculty member at Bard’s campus in Annandale and at its New York- based Globalization and International Affairs Program, he teaches on American foreign policy and Anglo-American grand strategy, including curriculum addressing Sun Tzu and Clausewitz. The year 2001 was the time that Mead released Special Providence: American Foreign Policy and how it changed the World. It was awarded the Lionel G elber Award for the most outstanding work in English on international Relations in 2002. The Italian translation was awarded the Premio Acquistoria award which is an award that is given each year to the most important book in the history field released. Special Providence, which stemmed from an article first published in the issue of Winter 1999/2000 of The National Interest, “The Jacksonian Tradition,” discusses the four major guiding ideas that have influenced development of American foreign policy throughout history including the Hamiltonians and the Jeffersonians, the Hamiltonians, Wilsonians and those of the Jeffersonians and Jacksonians.
