Patrick Lance Borders (born May 14 1963) is an American former professional baseball player as well as a current Minor League Manager. He was an catcher for Major League Baseball from 1988 until 2005. He was named the Most Valuable Player of the 1992 World Series as a player of the Toronto Blue Jays. Borders also earned the Olympic gold medal as part of team United States baseball team at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. He is currently the managing the Williamsport Crosscutters of the New York-Penn League.
Borders has been signed by Milwaukee Brewers to a minor league contract following during the season of 2004. On May 19 2005, he was purchased from Seattle on behalf of the Brewers in exchange for cash and moved to Triple A Tacoma from the Pacific Coast League. With Seattle’s principal catcher Miguel Olivo struggling, and losing the backup catcher Dan Wilson to an injury, Borders became Seattle’s primary catcher for the beginning during the year 2005. Seattle assigned him to assignment just in the aftermath of the All-Star Break to make room for some young prospects. In his time at Triple-A Tacoma for the Mariners, Borders stated that he prefers to remain in Triple-A since he was close than his loved ones, loved the lifestyle, and also had enough to make ends meet.
On August 7, 2009, the Blue Jays held a pre-game ceremony at the Rogers Centre recognizing members of the 1992 and 1993 World Series teams, including Borders. As part of the event, Borders caught the ceremonial first pitch from Cito Gaston, then in his second stint as Blue Jays manager after leading the team to both Series titles.
In June 2015, Borders began his first season as manager of the Williamsport Crosscutters, the Philadelphia Phillies’ short-season single A affiliate.
Borders was released by the Jays as an independent player following his 1994 campaign, however he he never had a home as permanent as Toronto was for him during his seven seasons there. In the next decade, Borders played for The Kansas City Royals (1995), Houston Astros (1995), St. Louis Cardinals (1996), California Angels (1996), Chicago White Sox (1996), Cleveland Indians (1997-1999) Then he returning in Toronto at the end of 1999. Borders is a native of Columbus, Ohio, but lived the majority of his youth living in Lake Wales, Florida, where he is now. He was a student at Lake Wales High School and was a standout player in both baseball and football. He hit .440 as a junior and when he was a senior, the bat was .510 and set an all- time school record of 10 home runs as well as 36 RBI. Even though the school offered him a football/baseball offer at Mississippi State University, he declined to join the Blue Jays, who had taken him on during the 6th round of 1982’s Major League Baseball Draft.
Borders was raised as a player in his home in the Toronto Blue Jays system and made his debut in the major leagues in 1988, appearing for 56 times. At first, he played third and first base, he was changed to a catcher when his defense was insufficient to warrant his continued participation in the major leagues. Through the subsequent seasons, he grew into an all-time spot behind plate. He also was an integral part of both the 1993 and 1992 World Series champion teams. In September 2nd, 1990 when he was playing for Blue Jays Blue Jays, Borders caught Dave Stieb’s no hitter — the only one in the history of the franchise to this point.
On January 25, 2006, the Los Angeles Dodgers signed Borders to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training. On May 27, he announced his retirement. Borders finished his career with a .253 batting average, 69 home runs, and 346 run batted in in 1,099 games.
