The Los Angeles Dodgers selected Hochevar in the 39th round (1.191st overall), of the 2002 MLB amateur draft. However, Hochevar chose to go to college at the University of Tennessee. Hochevar served primarily as a relief pitcher for the Volunteers during his first year. He struck out 73 batters in 77 innings and walked 24. He played college summer baseball for the Cotuit Kettleers, Cape Cod Baseball League. Hochevar missed eight weeks of play in his sophomore season due to injury. He was still good enough to be selected for USA Baseball National Team and won the FISU II World Universities Baseball Championship against Japan. Hochever rebounded as a junior by striking out a school-record 154 batters and posting a 15.3 record with a 2.26 ERA. He was awarded the Roger Clemens Award and the Southeastern Conference Pitcher Award for his efforts.
Hochevar would be selected again by the Dodgers, this time in round 40 of the 2005 draft. After initial negotiations with Hochevar and Scott Boras, the Dodgers selected Hochevar as their agent. Hochevar then switched to Matt Sosnick as his agent and received a $2.98million signing bonus from Logan White, the Dodgers’ scouting director. Hochevar decided to change agents and returned to Boras the following day, reneging on his agreement. Although there were many months of lukewarm negotiations, both sides failed to reach an agreement.
Hochevar made his major league debut September 8, 2007 in a game against the New York Yankees. In four appearances, Hochevar had a 0-1 record and a 2.13 ERA.

On March 13, 2013. Royals manager Ned Yost announced that Hochevar would not begin the season in the starting rotation. Hochevar was instead assigned to the bullpen for middle relief duties. In that role, he performed effectively for the Royals, posting a 1.92 ERA in 70.1 innings. He also struck out 82 batters while walking only 17.
