He faced opposition from the Republican U.S. Representative Bobby Jindal, who then represented Louisiana’s 1st congressional district in suburban New Orleans. After the decision by Louisiana Republicans to endorse Jindal, Boasso was approached about running for governor as a Democrat.

The year 1996 was the one when Boasso was elected to succeed the Republican state senator Lynn Dean of Plaquemines Parish. After Boasso’s resignation the seat was returned to Republican control. In the primary election of 2007 state representative A. G. Crowe from Pearl River defeated the Democrat Kenneth L. Odinet Sr. 11 625 (52 percentage) against 10,811 (48 percent). After the year 2008 Odinet made the switch into his Republican Party in an unsuccessful run to run for Louisiana Public Service Commission.
