On January 28, 2004 He was appointed archbishop in Belo Horizonte. The ceremony took place on the 26th of March. Pope Benedict XVI named him as a member of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith on the 22nd September 2009. On the 28th of July, 2010, he was also appointed bishop of the Brazilian ordinariate for people of the eastern rite.
