Vefa Salman (born 1 January 1965) is a Turkish politician, who has been the mayor of Yalova as of 1 . June. He was initially elected during the local elections that took place on the 30th of March, 2014 but the outcomes of Yalova were declared invalid through the Supreme Electoral Council of Turkey and the vote was then re-held on the 1st of June, which confirmed his victory. He is a part of the Republican People’s Party (CHP).
Salman is Salman was the CHP candidate for Mayorship of Yalova in the race against incumbent Yakup Kocal of the Justice and Development Party (AKP) in the local election in 2014. At first, the CHP was ahead in the vote count but the AKP asked for a recount and they were declared the winner. AKP won on just one vote. After the CHP demanded a recount of 65 ballot boxes and the district electoral council voted to conduct recounts for 124 ballot boxes following which Salman won after six votes. It was the Supreme Electoral Council subsequently cancelled the vote in Yalova and rescheduled fresh elections to take place on 1 June. Salman then won the election by 228 votes , beating his AKP opposition. Salman’s campaign was heavily backed by Yalova’s Member of Parliament Muharrem Ince who was at the time a leader of the group in the Parliament of the CHP.
As an CHP leader, Salman came under scrutiny for his decision to allow the destruction of several trees to build the construction of a highway junction and bridge. This was particularly because of the environmentalist position that the CHP and a large number of party members adopted during Gezi Park protests 2013, which initially been triggered by government plans to demolish a park in the city to make way for an outlet mall.
