The undrafted player has also participated for the National Hockey League (NHL) with the Calgary Flames.

On June 26th, 2017, Elson was again as a restricted free-agent was not offered a qualifying contract by Colorado Avalanche, thus ending his one year contract with the club and allowing him to enter free agency. On July 1, 2017, Elson signed a one-year contract with the Detroit Red Wings. On September 25, 2017, Elson was assigned to the Red Wings’ AHL affiliate known as The Grand Rapids Griffins.

In the 2018–19 season, Elson regained his scoring touch with the Griffins. Having eclipsed his previous seasons totals, and while placing fourth in team scoring, Elson was signed mid-season to a two-year contract by the Red Wings on February 5, 2019.

Elson was a part of his initial four pro seasons with the American Hockey League (AHL) with the Abbotsford Heat, Adirondack Flames and Stockton Heat. Elson was called back for Calgary for the last game in the 2016-2017 NHL season. He began his NHL debut in April 9th of 2016. Elson scored his first NHL point with an assist in the 2-1 win against his team, the Minnesota Wild.

Undrafted, Elson played junior hockey with the Red Deer Rebels of the Western Hockey League (WHL) and later joined the Flames team as a free-agent signing in the year 2011.

The end of the season, and also at the expiration of his rookie deal, Elson was not qualified by the Flames and was released as an unrestricted free agent. On July 1st in 2016 Elson signed a one-year two-way contract with the Colorado Avalanche. In the 2016-17 season following his attendance at an Avalanche training camp, he was transferred to an AHL affiliate which was called the San Antonio Rampage. The season quickly stalled when he suffered an injury after just four games , resulting in an injury to the lower part of his body. He was back in the last period of the season and scored just three points over 13 games.

During the 2017–18 season, Elson registered nine goals and 12 assists in 57 games for the Griffins. On June 18, 2018, Elson signed a one-year contract extension with the Griffins.
