Aged just 12 years old and 355 days old, Harimoto beat veteran pros Ho Kwan Kit, Hugo Calderano and his teammate Kohei Sambe to claim the U-21Japan Open title in 2016. In winning the title Harimoto became the youngest to win the ITTF World Tour under-21 men’s singles title. In the following the same year Harimoto was awarded gold in both the boy singles and teams events in the World Junior Table Tennis Championships in Cape Town, South Africa. This was a historic win and Harimoto won the title of youngest champion of this year’s World Junior Championships aged 13 years and 163 days. Harimoto was ranked as an Under-21 player of No. 10 in the world in December 2016.

Harimoto first was awarded Harimoto’s All-Japan Table Tennis Championships Juniors title in 2010 when he was an infant. He continued to take the title throughout the six years of his elementary school years. The year 2015 saw him was selected as a representative of Japan during the World Junior Table Tennis Championships in France and became one of the youngest Japanese player ever to be selected. Due to the terrorist attacks in November attacks in 2015 Paris attack, Harimoto was not able to compete in the tournament.
