The NJ State Council on the Arts gave Nussbaum with an Individual Artist Fellowship in 2001 and again in 2009. He was a Fellow of the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts and was a MacDowell Colony fellow in 2005 2007, 2006 and 2005.

In 1987, Nussbaum designed an 11’x72 3D wall mural, that was commissioned by Hasbro Toy Company. It was in the year 1992 that Nussbaum was able to begin creating public art projects through a grant through the Metropolitan Transit Authority, Metro North Railroad and the Metro North Railroad in the Scarsdale and Hartsdale stations in Westchester County, NY. Since then, he’s created numerous public art pieces and private commissions. These include works for 5 New Jersey Transit stations, the New York City Public Schools and The Princeton Library, the Wildwoods NJ Convention Center as well as the Children’s All Ages Playground, Edgemont Memorial Park Montclair, NJ and the College of New Jersey.

Nussbaum was born in Minneapolis in Minnesota, where he was educated in his school, the University of Minnesota. In 1980, he moved into New York City where he was an assistant in the studio for the art painters Mimi Gross, Red Grooms and Suzan Pitt. In 1982, he started creating art on a regular basis.

Nussbaum is also well-known for his designs of objects. In 1985, he started The Acme Robot Company, creating night-lights and light models that he designed. In 1988, he established Atomic Iron Works, designing and manufacturing iron hats and coat racks, as well as other useful objects, available in museums shops like The Whitney Museum of American Art, NY, NY, The Dallas Museum of Art, Dallas, TX and The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. In 1992, the Children’s Universe/Rizzoli published his book of activities, My World is Not Flat.”

His sculpture has been included in museum exhibitions at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Minneapolis, MN, the Laforet Museum, Tokyo, Japan, the Nicolayson Art Museum Casper, WY, the Montclair Art Museum, Montclair, NJ, the Hunterdon Museum of Art, Clinton, NJ, the Anchorage Museum of History and Art, Anchorage, Alaska, The Contemporary Austin (Laguna Gloria Art Museum), Austin, Texas and the Wright Museum of Art, Beloit, Wisconsin. In 2003 the Montclair Art Museum commissioned Nussbaum to create “Home Sweet Home”, a site-specific mural of abstracted geometric and folkloric motifs. Home Sweet Home was accompanied by a display of twenty of the artist’s enigmatic, allegorical figures.
