Coghlin was born in the western part of Canada and was a student at the University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point. He was coach of the Stevens Point team that won the NCAA Division III national championship for the first time in the history of the school. He was twice named an All-American defensive player.

Coghlin played his team of St. Norbert Green Knights to their first national title in 2008, taking each of the Frozen Four games through the score of a shutout. St. Norbert finished the 2008 season with a 27-1-4 record which was the lowest number of losses for an NCAA Division III men’s ice hockey champion. Coghlin received the honor of being recognized as the NCAA Division III Coach of the Year in the year 2008. Coghlin was also a part of the team that took it through winning the Frozen Four in 2003, 2004and 2006, 2007 and 2008. In his 17 years as a coach, Coghlin had an impressive total of 365 victories, 104 losses and 39 tie-ups. In the final stretch of the 2009-2010 hockey season Coghlin was ranked 41st among all-time college men’s hockey coaches. In the top 100 all-time winningest men’s hockey coaches in the college, Coghlin ranks second in winning percentage of .757.
