He became the second-youngest Ironman Champion, behind Germany’s Thomas Hellriegel by 20 days. He took home in his third Ironman distance race during the Challenge Copenhagen in the year 2010, exceeding Hellriegal’s record of two Ironman distance victories within three months. In 2011, Van Berkel successfully defended his Challenge Copenhagen title in a tightly fought race against Dane Jimmy Johnsen. Since becoming a professional athlete, Van Berkel has competed in Ironman and Ironman 70.3 races in Australia, Asia, Europe and America.

Van Berkel grew up in Albury, New South Wales and was a part of Australian Rules Football (AFL). He began to train for and competing in triathlons around when he was 18 as a method to keep healthy throughout season.
