Bhikshuni Thubten Chodron was raised in an “non- religious Jewish” family near Los Angeles, California and obtained her B.A. in history from the University of California at Los Angeles in 1971. After traveling throughout Europe, North Africa and Asia for approximately one and a quarter years, she was awarded an education credential and was admitted to University of Southern California to pursue post-graduate studies in education. She also worked as a teacher for the Los Angeles City School System. She took the meditation classes taught by Lama Thubten Nohe and Kyabje Thumbten Zopa Rinpoche after which she traveled to Kopan Monastery in Nepal to pursue her studies in Buddhism. In 1977, she was appointed an Buddhist nun by KyabjeLing Rinpoche in Dharamshala and, in 1986, she was granted Bhikshuni (full) ceremony in Taiwan.
In 2016, she was awarded in 2016 the Global Bhikkhuni Award, presented by the Chinese Buddhist Bhikkhuni Association of Taiwan.
Emphasizing the practical application of the Buddha’s teachings in our daily lives, Thubten Chodron tries to explain them in ways easily understood and practised by Westerners. She has worked on re-establishing the Bhikshuni lineage of Buddhist nuns, cultivating interfaith dialogue, and Dharma outreach in prisons. Seeing the importance and necessity of a monastery for Westerners training in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, she founded Sravasti Abbey, a Buddhist monastic community north of Spokane, WA and is the abbess there. It is the only Tibetan Buddhist training monastery for Western monks and nuns in America.
Bhikshuni Thubten Chodron trained and practiced Buddhism within the Tibetan tradition extensively throughout India as well as Nepal under the direction by the 14th Dalai Lama, Tsenzhab Serkong Rinpoche Thubten Yeshe, Thubten Yeshe Thubten Zopa, Rinpoche as well as others Tibetan masters, and also during three consecutive years, in Dorje Pamo Monastery in France. She was the spiritual director in Istituto Lama Tzong Khapa, Italy for two years. She was also a the resident teacher at the Amitabha Buddhist Centre in Singapore and for 10 years, she was the spiritual director and instructor at the Dharma Friendship Foundation in Seattle, US.

Thubten Chodron was co-organiser of Life as a Western Buddhist Nun, an international gathering for Western Buddhist nuns held in 1996.
