Thompson Usiyan is one of the most popular and richest Association Football Player who was born on April 27, 1956 in Effurun, Delta State, Nigeria. Thompson Usiyan (born 27 April 1956) is a retired Nigerian football (soccer) player. The player holds the NCAA Division I career scoring record. He played in the North American Soccer League, Major Indoor Soccer League, American Soccer League and Continental Indoor Soccer League. He was a part of the Nigerian Olympic soccer which boycotted the 1976 Olympics. He played in a number of games in the Nigerian national team of football.
The year was 1981 when he was signed by in 1981, the Montreal Manic of the North American Soccer League. The Manic swapped Usiyan with the Tulsa Roughnecks following the 1982 season. He was limited by injuries to his legs to just 11 games for Tulsa Roughnecks during the 1983 season. The team was released on the 11th of March, 1984. On April 12, 1984 he joined the Oklahoma City Stampede of the United Soccer League. He was the league’s leader in scoring and placed third in points. At the end of October 1984 He signed with the Minnesota Strikers of the Major Indoor Soccer League. The following year, he made a brief return to playing outdoors when he joined the Tulsa Tornados of the USL but the league fell apart after just six games. Usiyan was treated for arthroscopic surgery in the summer, but he returned with his former team the Strikers during the autumn of 1985, and was able to play the rest of the season in Minnesota. On March 26, 1987 the Strikers transferred Usiyan with the Los Angeles Lazers in exchange for Greg Ion after Usiyan had an altercation in the locker room in the locker room with Strikers goalkeeper Tino Lettieri. Usiyan was with the Lazers until the 1987-1988 season. He didn’t return to the field until he was signing with the Maryland Bays of the American Soccer League in June of 1989. In the time he was not playing soccer, he completed his MBA from Appalachian State. In August of 1989, he was back at MISL after signing with the St. Louis Storm. In the two seasons he spent in St. Louis, Usiyan began his career as tax consultant. After completing his education in accounting, he spent some working as an accountant, and after retirement, he was a full-time tax advisor. In this summer Usiyan was a player for the Hamilton Steelers in the Canadian Soccer League. On the 9th of September, 1991 the Storm transferred Usiyan’s name to the San Diego Sockers in exchange for Branko Segota as well as the Sockers 1992 draft selection. Usiyan was the winner of in 1992 the MISL title in the Sockers. The 20th November of 1992 was the day that Usiyan was signed by the St. Louis Ambush of the National Professional Soccer League. The 1st of June 1993 saw the Arizona Sandsharks drafted Usiyan in the first round of the 1993 Continental Indoor Soccer League supplemental draft. A few days later they made a deal with the San Diego Sockers traded Wes Wade to the Sandsharks in exchange for Usiyan, Alex Golovnia and Nassim Olabi. On September 10, 1993 the league was forced to suspend Usiyan indefinitely because of his accumulation of red cards. Usiyan was MISL’s sixteenth top scorer during 1984-85 while part of the Minnesota Strikers, with 62 points in 47 games. He was 15th most efficient in the following season, scoring 60 points in 40 games. Usiyan scored eighth during the 1987-88 season when an official of the Los Angeles Lazers with 88 points in 51 games. He was the sixth-highest scorer in the 1990-91 season with the score of 102 points over 51 games with the St. Louis Storm. Usiyan was among the top scorers for one last time (in the final season of the league) finishing 15th overall with scores of 57 in the 40 games played for the San Diego Sockers. His name was awarded as the Championship Series Most Valuable Player when the Sockers took the title.
