Oelsner later retracted his claim and acknowledged responsibility, saying that whatever took place was likely to have happened when the gun was under his possession. Oelsner made a public announcement of his decision to retire from competition skiing at closing in the 2010 Games.
Oelsner has completed a 6-month national ban, and then returned to compete in his participation in the Winter Paralympics in Torino. He was able to win bronze in the 5km cross country ski.
