In 2004, Margus Oopkaup (with Raivo Kuusk) penned his first book: Mõtle endasse. The following year he penned the children’s Christmas play Jõuluvana kodu jõulud, published by Tänapäev.

In 2015, Margus Oopkaup also returned to television in several episodes of the TV3 series Kättemaksukontor as the character of Magnus. Also in 2015 a play, Heldur ja Naised (Fantaasia publishing) and Iseendale (Hea Tegu publishing), a collection of poetry, were published.

Oopkaup got engaged to the Endla Theatre shortly after he graduated from Tallinn State Conservatory’s 1982 graduation. Oopkaup appeared in many stage productions there until his departure in 2000. His most memorable roles in theater included those of Leo Tolstoy and A. H. Tammsaare as well as Mika Waltari, August Strindberg and August Kitzberg. Gerhart Hauptmann, Slawomir Mrozek. Ivan Turgenev, Franz Pocci, Brian Friel were also among his notable roles.

Margus Oopkaup was a Saaremaa native who was born in Kuressaare. His father was a schoolteacher and his mother was an RN. In 1977, he graduated from Kuressare’s secondary school. He studied at Tallinn State Conservatory (now the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre) between 1978 and 1982 under the guidance of Aarne Ukskula. His graduating classmates included Anu Lamp and Jaan Rekkor as well as Laine Magi, Sulev Teppart, Andrus Vaarik and Viire Valdma. From 1985 to 1989, he also studied psychology at Tartu University.

He made his screen debut as Anton Kolumbus in 1981’s Tallinnfilm drama Joulud Vigalas, directed by Mark-Toomas Saar. The role of Paarn anders was then followed by the film adaptation of August Gailit’s 1938 novel Karge Meri. This movie, directed by Arvo Kruusement in 1981, chronicles the lives seal hunters on the Baltic Sea coast. Oopkaup played the role of Joonatan, a character he played in 1983’s Kaljo Kiisk-directed film Nipernaadi (English release: The Adventurer). This film was based on Toomas Nipernaadi, a 1928 Estonian novel by August Gailit. Oopkaup received the Best Young Actor Award for 1983 in recognition of his performance in the film.

In 2000, Oopkaup was fired from the Endla Theatre after eighteen years. Following his departure, Oopkaup’s mental and physical health began to decline. He was diagnosed with crippling rheumatoid arthritis in his legs and suffered from severe bouts of depression for which he had to be hospitalized. As his health declined, he worked a series of odd-jobs, including work as an undertaker, a shop salesperson and a security guard, among others. In 2005, he began working at the Pärnu rehabilitation center for people with special needs and the Pärnu Hospital of Psychiatry Day Centre as a drama instructor.
