He made the move into the second. Bundesliga club Alemannia Aachen, but did not continue playing due to a persistent hip osteoarthritis. After an unsuccessful recovery He retired in the early part of 2006.
He later took up the offer from Karlsruher SC who, after the departure of Jens Nowotny, were in the hunt for a new head of defense. He was an easy fit into the team during his initial season in 1996-97 with KSC and was able to play 31 of his 34 game. In the next season it was the KSC was dropped from the Bundesliga however, Hengen continued to play within the Bundesliga playing for Borussia Dortmund, VfL Wolfsburg and Kaiserslautern and was only interrupted by brief encounters together with Besiktas J.K. In total, he played the sum of 224 Bundesliga games and scored seven goals.

The family was raised to Landau located in the Palatinate, Hengen was in the amateur team of SV Rulzheim and Phonix Bellheim before moving to 1. FC Kaiserslautern. With the A youth squad and the Kaiserslautern youth team, he was the winner of his first German champions for youth in the year 1993. As a young international athlete who played in the totality of 13 international games between both the U16 as well as U18 age groups, and then 13 more games for the national U21 team.
In the 1992-93 football season, He made his debut for 1. FC Kaiserslautern his first Bundesliga match. In his final match for 1. FC Kaiserslautern, he won the German Cup in Berlin in May 1996.
