He was a part of the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Calgary Flames, Hartford Whalers, Ottawa Senators, Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, New York Islanders and Columbus Blue Jackets. He is the elder brother of the former NHL player Chris Drury. The Drury family was from Boston, Massachusetts, but spent his childhood within Trumbull, Connecticut.

Drury was a retired professional hockey player in April of 2007. Drury was inducted into Fairfield County Sports Hall of Fame in 2015.

Drury played in his first year of soccer in Harvard University, and was selected 42nd overall by the Calgary Flames in the 1989 NHL Entry Draft. Drury received the honor of being named Ivy League Rookie of the Year in 1989 and was awarded ECAC All-Rookie accolades his freshman year (1989-90) at Harvard. Serving as captain of the team during 1992-93, Drury played a key role in leading the Crimson men’s hockey team to an ECAC regular season championship as well as an appearance for the NCAA Men’s Ice Hockey Championship. In 1992-93, Drury was named the most valuable player in the Beanpot tournament following his winning goal in the game and taking his team Crimson towards the Beanpot championship. The very year, the player was chosen as a first-team All-Ivy and first team All-ECAC and All-America first team. In 1992-93, the student was also named Ivy League Player of the Year, ECAC Player of the Year and an official finalist in the Hobey Baker Award. He was later added on the ECAC All-Decade Team for the 1990s.

Drury played for his country in the United States at the 1992 and 1994 Winter Olympics. Drury also played for Team USA on numerous other occasions, participating in both the 1991 and 1990 World Junior Championships. Drury also played for Team USA at the 2003 IIHF Men’s Worlds.

Drury is married to former All-American lacrosse player Liz Berkery Drury. They have five children and reside in Winnetka, Illinois.
