Houck was a student at Collinsville High School situated in Collinsville, Illinois. Houck was selected to the Toronto Blue Jays in the 12th round of 2014’s Major League Baseball Draft, however, he didn’t sign. Instead, he went to his own University of Missouri to play college baseball.
As an undergraduate in the University of Missouri at the time of 2015 Houck played in 15 of the games and went 8-5, with an 3.49 earned run rate (ERA) as well as 91 striking outs, and just 12 walks over 100/3 innings. Following his season ended, Houck was a player with his United States collegiate national team. In the game against Cuba, Houck, A. J. Puk and Ryan Hendrix combined to throw an unbeaten inning. In his sophomore year, Houck started 15 games and went 5-6 with an 2.99 ERA and 106 strikeouts.
He began 2019 with the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs, and was promoted to the Triple-A Pawtucket Red Sox on July 13. Overall during 2019, Houck was 8–6 with a 4.01 ERA and 107 strikeouts in 107 ⁄3 innings. Following the 2019 regular season, Houck made six starts for the Peoria Javelinas of the Arizona Fall League.
