Tamara Vladimirovna Bykova (Russian: Tamara Vladimirovna Bykova ; born on the 21st of December in 1958) is a Russian former track and field athlete who was a member of in the Soviet Union and competed in the high jump. She was her 1983 World Champion, the 1988 Olympic bronze medallist, and a former world record-holder who cleared 2.03 and 2.04 meters in 1983, and 2.05 meters in 1984. She also took bronze medals from 1982’s European Championships, the 1989 and 1991 World Indoor Championships, and three occasions in the World Cup (1981, 1985 and 1989).).
As of 1987 Bykova was awarded a silver award at the World Championships in Rome, with an average clearance of 2.04 meters. She was the winner Stefka Kostadinova, a native of Bulgaria who set the world record for 2.09 meters. In 1988, at the Olympic Games in Seoul, Bykova took home the bronze medal by 1.99 metres, which was behind American gold medallist Louise Ritter and the silver medallist Kostadinova.
Then, in June of 1984 Bykova set a new record for world records with the clearance of 2.05 meters. This was her best ever. This record would be in place for only a month, since Bulgaria’s Lyudmila Andonova broke the record by 2.07 meters in July. Bykova was not able to compete in the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles because of her Soviet boycott.

Bykova is a native of Azov, Rostov, Russia and first gained international attention in her participation in the 1988 Olympic Games in Moscow, where she placed ninth in the finals with a jump of 1.88 meters. In the following week, she won the Soviet championship with a leap of 1.97 meters. In The 1981 World Cup in Rome, she jumped 1.96 meters to place second behind the West German Ulrike Meyfarth who set the world record for her the jump that was 2.02 meters. In 1982, at the European championships at Athens, Bykova cleared 1.97 meters to finish second only to Meyfarth. In 1983, at the European Indoor Championship in Budapest She achieved 2.03 meters to take home the medal in gold and created a new world indoor record.
In the 1983 World Championships in Helsinki, Bykova and Meyfarth were the only jumpers who cleared 1.99 meters. Only Bykova could reach the next step of 2.01 meters to be the first world champion. The next time they met, Meyfarth and Bykova took place a month later during the European Cup in Crystal Palace in London. The first time Meyfarth made a world record when she jumped to a height of 2.03 meters, however only moments later, the Russian also jumped to the same height and matched the record in the world, however she needed to make an extra attempt to beat the German and ended up having to settle to finish second. Just four days later, they met again at the same venue, this time in Pisa. But this time, Bykova won by setting a new World Record of 2.04 meters.
Bykova received a three-month ban when she tested positive for the drug ephedrine at the Goodwill Games in 1990, and missed the European Championships held later that year.
