Thomas James Brodie (born June 7 in 1990) is a Canadian professional ice hockey player who plays for the Calgary Flames of the National Hockey League (NHL). Brodie was a fourth-round selection for the Flames in the 114th spot overall in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. Brodie played for four seasons playing in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) prior to his professional debut in the year 2010. On the international stage, he represented Canada during the 2013 IIHF World Championship.
Brodie started the year 2011-12 in Abbotsford and then injuries to Anton Babchuk led to his being recalled from the Flames on November 11 the 11th of November, 2011. Brodie made his very first NHL point when he assisted on an assist of Lee Stempniak against the Chicago Blackhawks on the 18th of November. Brodie scored his first NHL goal came nine days later came against goalie Niklas Backstrom, who plays for the Minnesota Wild when an attempted play towards Tim Jackman was deflected into the goal. Due to the 2012–13 NHL lockout, Brodie began the 2012–13 season in Abbotsford. He scored 20 points in 35 games with the Heat before NHL play resumed. Finishing the season with the Flames, he scored 2 goals and 14 points in 47 games. He emerged as one of the Flames’ top defencemen, averaging over 20 minutes of ice time per game and earning an invitation to join Team Canada at the 2013 IIHF World Championship. Brodie appeared in seven games and recorded one assist for Canada, who were eliminated in the quarterfinals of the tournament.
In the midst of his 20th season, the Flames believed that Brodie was on track to become a professional in the fall of 2010-11. The team was pleased with the improvement that he brought to the game and predicted that he would be joining them in their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate known as called the Abbotsford Heat. A solid performance at the team’s camp for rookies as well as performances at the main camp, which were awe-inspiring for both his coaches and teammates resulted in Brodie getting a place with the Flames for the start of the season. Brodie was picked for his team the Saginaw Spirit in the third round of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Priority selection in 2006 however, he opted out of the Cyclones program and played most of the 2006-07 campaign with the junior B Leamington Flyers, where he was named the best defensive rookie of the year . Brodie established himself as one of the Heat’s top scorers and is considered one of the team’s top prospects. While he did not challenge those complaints, Brodie’s play was such that he was named the team’s lone representative at the 2011 AHL All-Star Game. He finished the year as Abbotsford’s leading scorer amongst defencemen, and tied for second on the team overall, with 34 points. He led the Heat in assists with 29.
